WIRELESS SERVICE PROVIDERS CHOOSE VIVATO FOR EFFICIENT, LARGE-SCALE COVERAGE
Vivato Wi-Fi Switch Sales Gaining Momentum in Public Wi-Fi Access Deployments

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - January 26, 2004 - Vivato™, a Wi-Fi infrastructure systems company, today announced two new wireless Internet service provider (WISP) customers, highlighting the strength of its Wi-Fi system of products in supporting the public Wi-Fi access market. TelAlaska and FibreTech Telecommunications have selected Vivato's 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi Switch to provide an economical solution for deploying large-scale Wi-Fi to commercial and residential customers.

Due to the unique architecture, design and RF capabilities of Vivato's 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi Switch, WISPs are able to provide extensive Wi-Fi coverage in towns and rural areas. Through its patent-pending smart antenna system and switching electronics, one flat-panel Vivato Wi-Fi switch provides 802.11b access at distances of up to four kilometers outdoors and 300 meters indoors. Mounted outdoors, the Vivato Wi-Fi switch can provide Wi-Fi access to areas as large as ten square miles, and when pointed at a nearby building, supplies Wi-Fi access to multiple floors in that building. The extended coverage capability of Vivato's Wi-Fi switch allows WISPs to serve a maximum number of customers using a minimum amount of equipment, installation and management.

"Wi-Fi is recognized as a cost-effective way to provide Internet access to places where traditional wire-line technologies have been slow to catch on and expensive to deploy because of geography and distance factors," said Don Stalter, CEO of Vivato. "Now, WISPs are creating wireless hot zones with a few Vivato switches, extending Wi-Fi coverage to areas where wireless networks had been difficult or impossible to deploy in the past."

Among the companies providing public Wi-Fi using Vivato Wi-Fi switches are:

  • TelAlaska: The vast distances between customers and servicing centers made deployment of high-speed wired Internet access cost prohibitive in the highly competitive Anchorage area. The long-range capabilities of Vivato's Wi-Fi switches proved to be the optimal solution for affordable delivery of a wireless Internet alternative to customers in Alaska's surprisingly sophisticated technology environment. TelAlaska "un-wired" Anchorage using six Vivato 2.4 GHz Outdoor Wi-Fi Switches and one Vivato 2.4 GHz Indoor Wi-Fi Switch.

  • FibreTech Telecommunications: Based in Ontario, Canada, FibreTech established Canada's largest wireless hot zone when it deployed one Vivato Wi-Fi switch in October. FibreTech plans to extend its Wi-Fi coverage across the Waterloo Region in 2004, providing Wi-Fi access to two of Ontario's top-ranked universities in the process.

"Because the Waterloo Region is one of the fastest-growing economies in Canada and has a high concentration of high-tech and biotech companies, we knew adding wireless Internet access to our product line would be an economically sound decision," said Steve McCartney, president and CEO of FibreTech. "In our search for an infrastructure provider, we knew we had to balance our limited building access and our desire to maintain the architectural integrity of the cities and towns in the Waterloo region. Vivato distinguished itself from the competition because we are able to minimize the number of Wi-Fi products we deploy, which helps us to manage our costs without sacrificing our coverage."
